sumbuk Dave Nelson is an interesting trombonist (and a nice guy). He utilizes a looper to set up rhythmic backgrounds to play against, and is hard to pin down as regards genre. This opens with a sort of doo-wop thing, and meanders elsewhere from there, sometimes a bit of rock, others a touch of ambient. I always find his stuff interesting, and look forward to anything new.

about

This set of instrumental music revealed itself through many hours of experimenting in my studio with no particular goal in mind other than to have fun and follow inspiration as I bumped into it. It's also somewhat of a natural byproduct of taking the time to develop some new skills. I taught myself to play drums, built a drum synthesizer and other studio gear, refurbished an old Rhodes piano, practiced trumpet, and worked hard on the craft of mixing. All of this fed into the music which provided a kind of workshop for me to practice and learn.

The first track is called "Lîla" which is a Sanskrit word meaning "divine play", a meditative state of creativity free from analysis. This concept was impressed upon me by my friend and collaborator Lonnie Holley who recommends a child-like approach to creating art, to always be playfully creating without overthinking it. Another inspiration for this work came from the late Roswell Rudd who is featured on the last track. His radiantly positive spirit was infectious to all who came in contact with him, and I was blessed to have called him a friend. All of these ideas and influences greatly inspired to me over the course of this project, and I hope to continue following that path in the future.

Thanks for listening.
